Jim's work has evolved over a thirty-five-year period. His style is an all over canvas technique. It began with a grid motif, building up the canvas using a stick to load up the canvas with paint. String lays out the grid. The build-up of texture is with automobile paints and other mediums, finally removing the string to leave the grid pattern. A new style uses an undercoat of one color of paint and then taping off the surface, adding more paint then removing the tape. The surface of this style is smooth and shiny. Spray paints and markers are also used with this painting style. Jim likes to use bright and bold colors.
